Meditations on the Poetry Samples (new 05/19/03) - Essay by Simon Moses

Cell Phone Scum - (WEB SITE EXCLUSIVE!)

You are everywhere,
And your vileness is incalculable.
No! I don’t want to hear your conversation:
You have absolutely nothing to say.
And still you subject me
To your inane prattle;
Or the sight of your retarded smile
With metal clamped to the
Side of your face,
Like some artificial tumour
Which mirrors the
Very real tumour that
Masquerades as your brain.
And how delightful it would be
If you were to collide fatally with a tree
While babbling on your cell phone
When you should have been
Concentrating on your driving;
Instead of snuffing out
The worthwhile life of
Someone with discretion:
Someone with regard
For the private space
Of the civilised.
Why don’t you spend
The infinity of hours
That you transmit useless noise
From your own stupid self
To the idiot on the other line,
And read a book for goodness sake!
But you are the world,
And the world is you.
It’s too bad that
Dante isn’t around to
Designate a whole new
Circle of Hell for you.
